Character Bio: Bette was madly in love with younger man, Peter Sampras, but her father, Wilbur, did not approve of the relationship for many reasons – the main one being his lack of wealth. Wilbur forced Bette to marry Edward Halcombe who came from the “right” family and when Peter returned from his first year of college, he received the heartbreaking news that she had married another man – and a man he loathed at that. Bette never did stop loving Peter but remained faithful to Edward (though he never was to her) and went on to give him 5 children. Lately though, she has become increasingly unhappy in her marriage and is thinking of getting out if she can with her dignity intact.
